BMI and its Importance

Body Mass Index (BMI) is an important marker of health. It’s a simple calculation that compares one’s weight and height, and gives an indication of whether that person is in a healthy range for their size. BMI has been used as a medical measure for centuries, but its importance has grown significantly in recent years. What is BMI?

BMI or Body Mass Index gives a view of a person’s body fat based on their height and weight. BMI is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by their height in meters squared. For example, a person who weighs 70 kilograms and is 1.75 meters tall has a BMI of 22.9. BMI isn’t used to diagnose obesity because it doesn’t take into account factors such as muscle mass, bone density, and distribution of body fat. However, it’s still a useful tool for assessing risk of developing obesity-related conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

Why is BMI Important?

BMI is an important tool for doctors to assess a person's risk for obesity-related diseases, such as heart disease and stroke. Individuals with a BMI between 25 and 30 are considered overweight, but not obese. Obesity is further classified as grade 1 (BMI of 30 to 35), grade 2 (BMI of 35 to 40), or grade 3 (BMI of 40 or higher). Grade 1 obesity increases your risk for developing obesity-related diseases, while grade 2 and 3 obesity pose an even greater health risk. That's why it's important for people who are overweight or obese to consult their doctors about losing weight in a healthy way.

BMI Range for Adults

What is a healthy BMI range for adults? The answer may surprise you.

There is no “one size fits all” answer to this question, as the ideal BMI range depends on a number of factors, including your height, age, gender, and muscle mass. That said, generally speaking, a healthy BMI for adults falls between 18.5 and 24.9. If your BMI falls outside of this range, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re unhealthy – but it could be an indication that you are at increased risk for certain health conditions.

Understanding BMI Results

Body mass index, or BMI, is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It’s used to predict whether a person is at risk for weight-related health problems. BMI results are given as a number. BMI ranges are categorized as follows:

Underweight: A BMI under 18.5 means that a person is underweight. This may put them at risk for health problems such as osteoporosis, anemia, and infections.

Normal weight: A BMI of 18.5-24.9 is considered normal weight. People in this category are less likely to have weight-related health problems than those who are underweight or obese.

Overweight: A BMI of 25-29.9 is considered overweight. An overweight BMI may put a person at risk for health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Obese: A BMI greater than or equal to 30 is considered obese. Obesity increases the likelihood of developing health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure
