Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

A Quadruple Marker Test is a blood test that provides useful information about a pregnancy. It can help estimate your baby's risk of Down syndrome, Edward's syndrome (trisomy 18), and neural tube defects.

During your second trimester, your healthcare professional will ask you if you want the quad marker screen. If you choose to have the screening, you will be between weeks 15 and 20, counting from the first day of your last period, when you decide to do so. The 16th and 18th weeks are when you'll get the most accurate results.

  • Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP): The liver of your infant makes AFP. A infant with levels above normal may have a neural tube defect such spina bifida or anencephaly.
  • Unconjugated estriol (UE): This hormone is produced by both your unborn child and the placenta. Low levels suggest an increased chance of having a child with Down syndrome.
  • Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG): The screening looks for an hCG hormone that the placenta produces. Unexpectedly high levels could raise the chance of having a child with Down syndrome.
  • Inhibin-A: This protein is created by your placenta and ovaries. Having a kid with Down syndrome is more likely if this protein is present in higher-than-expected amounts.

A normal Quadruple Marker Test result means that your baby has a low risk of Down syndrome, Edward's syndrome (trisomy 18), and neural tube defects.

If your Quadruple Marker Test is abnormal, it means there is an increased risk of having a baby with Down syndrome, Edward's syndrome (trisomy 18), or neural tube defects. It is important to talk to your doctor about this test result and continue to follow their instructions.

Yes, the Quadruple Marker Test is a very safe test. It has been used worldwide for over 30 years and is considered one of the most accurate tests for predicting birth defects in the unborn child

A small amount of blood will be drawn from your mother's arm by a medical practitioner. The phlebotomist next places a bandage across the arm to make the vein visible after cleaning the skin around the elbow with a disinfectant. The phlebotomist next uses a needle to take blood into a little tube from the vein. The procedure is short and usually doesn't involve much pain or discomfort. The lab receives the blood sample and does the necessary tests.

There is no specific preparation you need for the Quadruple Marker Test. Patients are usually asked to abstain from drinking alcohol and eating large amounts of fish, meat, poultry, or eggs for a few days before the test.

  • Down syndrome (trisomy 21). A newborn born with Down syndrome may have specific facial deformities, cardiac conditions, immune system problems, intellectual difficulties, developmental delays, etc. This disorder is brought on by chromosome 21-related abnormalities.
  • Trisomy 18. It is also known as Edward's Syndrome and is a genetic defect that can cause early or stillbirth.
  • Spina bifida. When the spine and spinal cord do not develop normally, a birth defect results. This is a defect of the neural tube.
  • Abdominal wall defects. An opening in the abdomen through which different abdominal organs might protrude is known as an abdominal wall defect.
