Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

An STD test is a medical examination that checks for sexually transmitted diseases. It's important to get tested regularly, especially if you're sexually active or have unprotected sex. The tests can detect various types of viruses and bacteria that cause STDs such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, HIV/AIDS.

Never use any product in your genital area such as douches or spermicides before the test. These products can affect the pH balance of your vagina and could lead to a false result.

For some STDs like chlamydia and gonorrhea, it can take as little as 2-7 days after exposure for an accurate test result. However, other STDs such as HIV and syphilis require a longer waiting period of up to several weeks or even months before accurate test results can be obtained.

For some STDs, like chlamydia and gonorrhea, urine tests can be very accurate. However, for other infections like HIV and herpes, blood tests may be more effective.

The good news is that typically, no fasting is required for this type of test. The reason behind not requiring a fast before an STD blood test is because it measures specific antibodies in your bloodstream. These antibodies can remain in circulation regardless of whether or not you have recently eaten something.

Examples of STDs that are not curable include HIV/AIDS, herpes, hepatitis B and C, and HPV. These infections can be spread through sexual contact or through blood-to-blood contact.

Some STDs have a longer incubation period than others before they show up in testing. For instance, it takes around two to six weeks for HIV antibodies to appear in blood tests after infection. Another factor is human error during sample collection or lab analysis. If proper hygiene protocols aren't followed during sample collection or if there's an error in labeling samples, then this could lead to inaccurate results.
