Prothrombin time (PT) is a blood test used to measure the clotting time of the blood. It is also known as prothrombin activity time (PAT). The PT measures how long it takes for the blood to clot after being injected with a thrombin molecule.

A prothrombin time test is used to check a person's blood clotting ability. It is most commonly used to evaluate patients who may have a bleeding disorder, cancer, or other medical conditions that can affect their blood clotting. The prothrombin time test is also used to diagnose heart failure.

The Prothrombin Time Test measures the time it takes for prothrombin to clot. A normal result is between 12 and 18 seconds.

The normal range of prothrombin time test is from 11 to 13 seconds.

The best way to prepare for a PT test is by drinking plenty of fluids prior to your appointment and abstaining from alcohol or caffeine the day of your test. You can also take ibuprofen or acetaminophen before your appointment if you experience any pain or discomfort during your testing.

Fasting is not required for a prothrombin time test. Normal eating habits and medications can prolong the time it takes the blood to clot.
