World Arthritis Day was observed for the first time in 1996 with an aim to spread awareness about the impact of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). It was established by the Arthritis Foundation and ever since then, it has been celebrated all across the world on the 12th of October, every year.

The Significance of World Arthritis Day

The term arthritis comes from the Greek word “arthro”, which means “joint”, and “it is”, which means “inflammation”. Even though arthritis is an extremely common ailment, a lot of misconception surrounds it. For example, unlike popular belief, arthritis is not a single disease but an umbrella term that encompasses more than 100 conditions that affect the joints, like rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus, and psoriatic arthritis. The symptoms of arthritis also vary, depending on the condition one is suffering from. Known to affect the joints like the knee or hip, arthritis is considered to be an old-people disease by most, and while it is true that the risk of developing arthritis increases with age, it can affect individuals of any gender and at any age.

Such common misconceptions are why World Arthritis Day is celebrated.

How Should One Observe World Arthritis Day?

Raise Awareness

Find out more about arthritis and how it can impact people and learn how arthritis patients can be helped. Everyone should pledge to help out people with arthritis whenever they get the chance.

Take Care

Arthritis is unavoidable in many cases. However, regular exercise and proper diet can go a long way in controlling the condition.

Be Prepared

Consult a doctor about undergoing an arthritis test panel, which includes a vitamin D test, calcium test, CRP test, thyroid test, etc. An arthritis test panel can help one understand their risks for developing arthritis.
