Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

A gastro test, short for gastrointestinal test, is a diagnostic procedure that helps healthcare providers assess the health of your digestive system. During this test, various tools like endoscopes or imaging scans are used to examine different parts of your gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and intestines.

One of the common diagnostic tests for gastro is an upper endoscopy, also known as esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD).

  • Bloating
  • Burping
  • Burning sensation in the stomach
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

For instance, an upper endoscopy typically takes around 15-30 minutes to complete, where a thin tube with a camera is inserted through your mouth to examine your esophagus and stomach. On the other hand, a colonoscopy may take longer, usually lasting between 30 minutes to an hour or more.

For most cases of acute gastroenteritis, which is often caused by viral or bacterial infections, the best course of action is usually rest and staying hydrated. This means drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and letting your body fight off the infection.

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Crohn's disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Celiac disease

Gastrointestinal tests, including endoscopies and colonoscopies, are generally safe procedures with minimal risks when performed by trained healthcare professionals. Complications such as bleeding or perforation are rare but possible.
