Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

The Rheumatoid Factor (RF) test is a blood test that measures the level of RF antibodies in your blood. These antibodies are proteins produced by your immune system that attack healthy tissues in your body, including joints and organs.

While the Rheumatoid factor (RF) test is a useful tool in diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis (RA), it does have its limitations. One of these limitations is that not all individuals with RA will test positive for RF. In fact, up to 30% of people with RA will have negative results on their RF tests.

Factors that may prompt a doctor to order an RA factor test include family history of RA or other autoimmune diseases, presence of nodules under the skin, and persistent fatigue or weakness.

Certain medications such as biologic drugs, corticosteroids and disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) can interfere with the test and produce inaccurate results.

RF tests  alone cannot be relied upon to diagnose RA with complete accuracy. In fact, it has been found that up to 30% of patients who do not have RA may still show positive results on an RF test. This means that relying solely on an RF test may lead to misdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment.

Fasting isn't necessary for RA factor tests; however, you should still follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding food intake before testing.
