An Anti-CCP Test is done to diagnose the risk of rheumatoid arthritis. Also known as the anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide test, Anti CCP evaluates the level of antibodies in the blood that generally target specific proteins found in the joints. The test provides an accurate and fast diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis.
CCP or Cyclic citrullinated peptide is a kind of autoantibody that usually works against the body’s antibodies. Both antibodies and autoantibodies are proteins created by the immune system. While antibodies guard against foreign substances, including bacteria and viruses, autoantibodies can lead to ailments by attacking the healthy cells in the body by mistake. The circular peptide has the amino acid citrulline. Both anti-citrullinated peptide antibodies and citrullination play a vital role in originating inflammatory reactions in autoimmune issues such as rheumatoid disease. The purpose of the Anti CCP test is to detect citrulline antibodies in the blood.
CCP antibodies attack healthy tissues in the joints. The anti-CCP test needs a blood sample to detect the presence of citrulline antibodies. If these antibodies are found in the blood, it indicates that the person has rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation, pain, and stiffness in the joints. It affects the lining of joints, leading to pain and inflammation that may result in joint deformity and bone erosion. The other body parts like wrists, shoulders, knees, ankles, and elbows can also be affected as the disease progress.
