Heart disease is one of the most common ailments affecting millions of men and women worldwide. It is crucial to diagnose it in the early stages for timely treatment. Certain factors in the blood, such as triglycerides, cholesterol, and fibrinogen, play a vital role in heart health. Thus, doctors prescribe or perform a series of tests to diagnose heart issues in patients. Health professionals also use some of these tests to monitor people for heart ailments before they develop visible symptoms of a heart attack. A heart blood test is a proactive approach used to understand a person’s risk of coronary artery disease or other issues in the heart.

Here is more about the blood tests used for diagnosing heart diseases.

Types of Heart Diseases

The term, heart disease refers to many different types of heart conditions and diseases. Some of the most common types of heart disease include cardiovascular disease, ischemic heart disease, cyanotic heart disease, and congenital heart disease.

Heart Test Types

There are many types of blood tests used for detecting rheumatic heart disease or ailments. The doctor will decide on tests based on the person’s symptoms, medical records, and risk factors. If a person shows symptoms of a heart attack or any underlying heart disease, a blood test can confirm or assess the level of damage in the heart. The list of heart tests includes:

  • Lipid Profile Test

This lipid profile test is used to check the levels of different types of cholesterol in the blood. It helps detect the risk of ischemic heart disease, stroke, or cardiac arrest in the future. Also known as a cholesterol test, a lipid profile test is used for evaluating many other factors in the blood, including total cholesterol test, triglycerides test, LDL cholesterol test, and HDL cholesterol test. Any abnormal levels of cholesterols create high chances of developing heart diseases.

  • Apolipoprotein Test

An apolipoprotein test looks for the level of apolipoprotein in the blood. Apolipoprotein A is a protein found in HDL or good cholesterol in the body. It aids start the procedure for HDL to eliminate bad kinds of cholesterol from the body, reducing the risk for cardiovascular disease. The doctors prescribe an Apolipoprotein test to figure out the risk for diseases. One may also need to get this test done if s/he is already suffering from heart issues or may have experienced a heart attack before.

  • High-sensitivity C-reactive protein test (hs CRP test)

The HS CRP test, or high-sensitivity C-reactive protein test, detects heart issues before the person has symptoms. The C-reactive protein (CRP) is produced by the liver as part of the body’s reaction to inflammation, mainly occurring due to an infection or injury. The test evaluates the level of CRP in the blood. A higher level of this protein can indicate an increased risk of heart issues, including cardiovascular disease and heart attack.

  • Cardiac Troponin Test

Troponin is a protein required for the contraction of cardiac and skeletal muscles. There are three kinds of troponin - I, C, and T. These proteins are released when heart muscles are damaged, usually with a heart attack. A higher amount of troponin T and I are released in case of severe damage to the heart. Both T (TnT) and troponin I (TnI) are good indicators of heart damage or injury. So a Cardiac Troponin Test looks for these proteins.

  • Natriuretic Peptides Test

Natriuretic peptides are proteins produced by the heart to help the body maintain relaxed cardiovascular functioning in blood vessels, eradicate fluids and expel sodium into the urine. The N-terminal pro-b-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) are two major types of these substances. Generally, low levels of NT-proBNP and BNP are there in the bloodstream. However, an increased level of these proteins may be a sign that the heart is not pumping enough blood required by the body. The doctors order this NT proBNP test to diagnose and monitor symptoms of potential heart failure.

  • Thyroid Function Tests

Thyroid hormones have an effect on cholesterol levels, blood vessels, and heart function. The thyroid gland produces thyroxine, a specific hormone in the blood, and if the hormones are too low or high, it can cause a fast or slow heartbeat and may lead to palpitations. A thyroid function test is used to see how the thyroid gland is working.

In addition, some other tests for diagnosing heart problems like cyanotic heart disease are:

  • Chest X-ray
  • Echocardiogram
  • Electrolyte test
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG)
  • Heart (cardiac) CT scan
  • Cardiac catheterization

Those with symptoms of heart attack, coronary artery disease, or any other condition should consult a doctor as soon as they can. Doctors will select an appropriate test and prepare a treatment plan according to the person’s symptoms and risk factors.
