Blood Culture & Sensitivity Test

Blood culture and sensitivity tests are performed to determine the presence of bacteria or fungi in the bloodstream. The test also helps identify the most effective treatment option for the condition. This type of diagnostic test can significantly help in controlling blood infections. One of the primary uses of the blood culture test is to determine the specific pathogen causing the blood infection and how best to combat it. A blood infection requires prompt identification of the specific pathogen and determining the most effective treatment approach to prevent progression. At Max Lab, individuals can access blood culture testing at competitive  prices across different cities in India.

Overview of the Blood Culture & Sensitivity Test in Mumbai

A blood culture and sensitivity test is a procedure to consider or rule out the possibility of systemic infection in the body. Systemic infection occurs when an infection is present in the bloodstream and affects the entire body as opposed to a single organ or body part.

In the blood culture test, a sample of blood is analysed to detect the presence of bacteria, yeast, fungus and other microorganisms. These disease-causing bacteria and pathogens often invade the body through:

• Mouth
• Eyes
• Nose
• Skin
• Lungs
• Urinary tract
• Open Wounds

A blood culture test can help identify which bacteria or microorganisms are causing the infection in the blood. And because several bacteria are resistant to antibiotics and therapy, the sensitivity test can identify the most effective antimicrobial agent to decide which medicine or antibiotic will work best to treat the infection.

It is a simple blood test wherein a blood sample is taken from the vein in one of the arms. The sample is then added to a substance that promotes the growth of bacteria. If no microorganisms grow in the culture after a specific period of observation, it is considered negative. A positive blood culture indicates the presence of microorganisms that could be causing infection in the blood. That’s why there is no normal range of the blood culture test since the results are either positive or negative. Further In this sensitivity test, the positive blood culture report sample is taken to first isolate microorganisms and then exposed to different antibiotic & antifungal drugs to determine which drugs are effective in killing them.

Also, while there is no special preparation required for the blood culture test, it is recommended to consult a doctor about any current medical conditions that may affect the results before undergoing the test.

Blood culture and sensitivity tests are performed to determine the presence of bacteria or fungi in the bloodstream. Once pathogens enter the bloodstream, they can rapidly multiply, causing complications and interfering with the body's defence mechanism, and preventing the immune system from functioning properly. This condition can be life-threatening if left untreated.

Blood infections can affect the entire circulatory system throughout the body. Pathogens originating from the skin, lungs, urinary tract, or gastrointestinal system are common sources of these infections. A blood culture lab test involves drawing a blood sample. It is then sent to a laboratory for analysis, and the results are provided to the doctor to determine the specific pathogen and an appropriate treatment for the infection.

Why Doctors Recommend Blood Culture & Sensitivity Test in Mumbai

A blood culture and sensitivity test is prescribed when the patient’s blood is suspected to be infected by certain germs that can impact the functioning of the body. Common symptoms may include: -

• Fever or chills.
• Inconsistent heart rate.
• Irregular breathing.
• Hypotension or low blood pressure.
• Fatigue.
• Confusion, disorientation.
• Dizziness.
• Gastrointestinal issues, such as constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain, indigestion, etc.
• Inflammation in areas of the body.
• Blood clots.
• Peeing less than usual.

These tests are also advised for people more susceptible to blood infections, like diabetics, HIV or AIDS, and Cancer patients.

The primary purpose of a blood culture test is to check if a person may have a blood infection and identify the causative microorganisms. Testing for blood infections is crucial, as they can lead to serious complications, such as sepsis. The results of the blood culture lab test help the doctor identify the specific organism or bacteria causing the infection, allowing for targeted treatment to effectively combat the infection. Max Lab offers the blood culture test at affordable prices to ensure that people can conveniently take the test and get accurate results for doctors to proceed with the best treatment.

Preparations Before the Blood Culture & Sensitivity Test in Mumbai

Typically, no special preparation is needed for a hemoculture test. However, testing is usually done before starting antibiotic treatment, as antibiotics can impact the accuracy of the results. For this reason, it is important to inform the doctor if the individual has taken any antibiotics prior to the test. The doctor might ask the person to discontinue certain medications that could interfere with the blood culture results.

What to Expect During the Procedure

A blood culture is a lab test which is typically performed at a specialised testing facility or hospital and rarely at an outpatient setting. During the blood culture test procedure, a phlebotomist will first thoroughly cleanse the skin with antiseptics to prevent contamination and take a sample of the blood by inserting a thin needle into the individual's vein. Typically, multiple blood samples are collected so the existence of bacteria or fungi can be easily detected in the blood culture test report. In the laboratory, blood samples are immediately placed in temperature-controlled culture media that promote microbial growth. The laboratory then monitors the samples continuously using automated systems that detect microbial acitivity through CO2 production or pressure changes.

Understanding the Test Results

A blood culture test report can tell if a person has a bacterial or yeast infection in their blood. It allows the doctor to identify the specific fungi or bacteria that are causing the infection. There is no normal range for a blood culture test, as the test results are defined as positive or negative.

Positive

A positive blood culture test report means there is bacterial or yeast growth in the blood. When a person takes two or more blood cultures and they show positive for the same type of bacteria or fungi, the identified microorganism is likely the cause of the infection. A bloodstream infection is a serious condition that requires prompt medical attention, typically in a hospital setting. Immediate treatment is essential to manage the infection effectively.

Negative

The meaning of a negative blood culture test result is that there is no detectable microbial growth after the standard incubation period of monitoring.. However, some individuals might show the symptoms of blood infections but have a negative test result. This might be because certain types of bacteria and yeast can be difficult to grow in a standard culture, so a special type of culture, like PCR test, may be required.

Symptoms of Blood Infection

The symptoms of blood infection include the following: -

• Chills
• Moderate to high fever
• Fatigue
• Faster breathing and heart rate
• Muscle aches
• Nausea

If the infection becomes severe, it can lead to various complications. These may include widespread inflammation in different areas of the body, the formation of small blood clots, a significant drop in blood pressure, and, in extreme cases, organ failure. These serious effects highlight the importance of early intervention and treatment to manage the infection and prevent further damage.

Blood cultures are performed more frequently for individuals who are at a higher risk of developing a blood infection. Certain situations can also elevate the risk of blood infections, including recent infections, surgical procedures, prosthetic heart valve replacements, and undergoing immunosuppressive therapy.

How to Prevent and Manage Bloodstream Infections Effectively

To prevent blood infections and potential progression to  sepsis, besides consulting with a healthcare provider, implement these evidence-based preventive measures: -

• Properly managing chronic conditions like diabetes, lung disease, cancer, and kidney disease.
• Getting recommended vaccinations to prevent or lessen the severity of infections that may result in sepsis.
• Practice good hygiene, including washing hands regularly and keeping cuts or wounds clean and covered until healed.
• Recognise early warning signs of sepsis and seek immediate medical attention. Sepsis is a medical emergency.  The quicker the response, the better the chances for a successful outcome.
