The Creatine Kinase-MB (CK-MB) test is a blood analysis that quantifies the concentration of a specific enzyme, creatine kinase-myocardial band (CK-MB), circulating in the bloodstream.
The test is crucial for detecting heart muscle damage, particularly in conditions like heart attacks, providing valuable insights into the overall cardiac health. Under normal circumstances, the CK-MB level in the blood is low or unrecognisable. However, when there is damage to the heart, such as a heart attack or conditions like pericarditis and myocarditis, the CK-MB is released into the bloodstream, making the CK-MB blood test a crucial biomarker for detecting anything related to the heart muscle.
The CK-MB level can increase significantly when damage to the heart muscle has occurred. It usually peaks around 24 hours after the damage and comes back to normal within 2-3 days. These characteristics of CK-MB make them particularly useful in detecting acute heart conditions.
