Kidney Function Test (KFT) Profile with Calcium, Uric Acid

This is a blood test for determining kidney health and function. The kidney profile test measures several parameters like creatinine, potassium, calcium, etc., and also helps calculate the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which measures how efficiently the kidneys are removing waste from the system. Beyond diagnosis, the KFT test, whose full form is the Kidney Function Test ,  is also helpful for monitoring the progression of kidney diseases, assessing treatment effectiveness, and enabling early detection of complications. Regular KFT monitoring is also essential for individuals with chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension and for those experiencing potential kidney-related symptoms such as blood in urine, painful or difficult urination, or increased urinary frequency.

Overview of the Kidney Function Test in Panipat

The KFT blood test with calcium and uric acid is a simple blood test that helps assess the function of the kidneys. The kidneys are crucial organs that play an important role in maintaining overall health, including filtering waste and toxins from the blood, controlling levels of water and certain essential minerals in the body, and much more. The lab test for kidney function, calcium, and uric acid checks for various parameters like bicarbonate, chloride, creatinine, urea, uric acid, calcium, potassium, etc. and is also used to calculate the GFR (glomerular filtration rate), which is a measure of the efficacy of kidney function. This test is generally used to screen and diagnose impaired kidney function. The cost of a Kidney Function Test in Panipat will vary based on the panel chosen. Higher than normal values in a Kidney Function Test in Panipat may be indicative of a number of issues like kidney stones, early kidney disease, etc.

Based on the test results of the KFT report, doctors can determine how well someone’s kidneys are functioning and diagnose conditions that can affect kidney function, such as kidney disease or kidney failure. People with a family history of kidney disorders, diabetes, and fluctuating blood pressure levels are recommended to book a cost-effective KFT test from a reputed diagnostic centre, such as Max Lab, in their city.

Preparations Before the Kidney Function Test in Panipat

Here is how you can prepare for a KFT blood test:

• The KFT test is not done on an empty stomach, which means fasting is not required. However, do follow all the instructions given by the doctor.
• Do not stress and stay calm during the sample collection, as it could influence the KFT test results.
• Take a proper night's sleep to ensure all your hormones remain balanced during the test.
• Refrain from drinking and smoking before sample collection to eliminate chances of error in the KFT report.
• Inform the doctor about any medication or supplements you are taking, as it may influence your test results. However, do not stop any medication unless explicitly instructed by your doctor.
• Hydration is crucial before the test. Also, certain foods and beverages must be avoided before the test, as per the doctor's advice.
• Lastly, make sure to follow the doctor’s instructions before, during and after the test.

What to expect during the procedure

The KFT test is generally done using a blood sample, however, in some cases, a urine sample may also be required. Here is what you can expect during the KFT blood test:

1. The healthcare provider will come to your home for sample collection and explain the test procedure to you.
2. They will then choose a vein for blood collection, typically in the inner elbow, and clean it with antiseptic.
3. A needle will be inserted into the vein, and the required amount of blood will be collected in a vial.
4. The healthcare provider will then remove the needle and apply pressure with gauze at the needle insertion site to stop further bleeding.
5. Lastly, a small bandage will be placed over the puncture site.

This whole procedure will take approximately 15 minutes.

Why Doctors Recommend Kidney Function Test in Panipat

The test is performed to check whether certain parameters related to kidney function are within the normal range. The KFT test can be prescribed to screen for kidney-related issues, assess kidney health in people suffering from conditions like hypertension or diabetes, or monitor the efficacy of a treatment plan for a kidney condition.

A doctor may prescribe a blood test for kidney function if a person shows symptoms like:

• Blood in the urine
• Pain while urinating
• Urge to urinate frequently

Conditions Diagnosed by Kidney Function Test in Panipat

Some of the conditions that can be diagnosed by the KFT test include: -

1. Chronic Kidney Diseases (CKD): KFT tests can be used to diagnose and monitor CKD  by assessing parameters like creatinine and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). These parameters help determine the stage and progression of the disease.
2. Kidney Infections: Infections such as pyelonephritis can be evaluated through KFT, which may show elevated white blood cell counts, the presence of bacteria or pus cells in the urine, and changes in kidney function markers.
3. Acute Kidney Injury (AKI): KFT helps in diagnosing AKI, often characterised by a sudden decline in kidney function, indicated by elevated creatinine levels and abnormal urine output.
4. Kidney Stones: The KFT test can assess kidney function and detect impairments caused by kidney stones, often indicated by changes in urine chemistry.
5. Diabetes: KFT is vital for diagnosing and monitoring diabetic nephropathy, where elevated urine albumin or protein levels signal kidney damage related to diabetes.

Understanding the Test Results

The KFT normal ranges provide a baseline for evaluating kidney health. Each KFT test parameter has a specific range that indicates optimal functioning. Values within these KFT normal ranges generally suggest healthy kidney function and proper fluid and electrolyte balance. Deviations from these normal ranges may indicate underlying issues needing further medical attention.

Here are some of the key KFT test paramters with thier normal ranges:

• Blood Urea: 19 - 44.1 mg/dL
• Creatinine: 0.72 - 1.25 mg/dL
• BUN: 6 - 20 mg/dL
• BUN/Creatinine Ratio: 5.5 - 19.2 %
• Uric Acid: 3.5 - 7.2 mg/dL
• Calcium Serum: 8.4 - 10.2 mg/dL
• Phosphorus: 3.9 mg/dL
• Sodium: 136 - 145 mmol/L
• Potassium: 3.5 - 5.1 mmol/L
• Chloride: 98 - 107 mmol/L

Effective Tips to Protect and Maintain Kidney Health

Here are some tips you can follow to protect and maintain kidney health:

• Eat a healthy diet: Include fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein in your diet. Limit intake of potassium, sodium, and phosphorus as suggested by the doctor.
• Stay hydrated: Drink more water to support kidney function, but avoid overhydration.
• Exercise Regularly: Engage in physical activity like walking, yoga, or swimming to maintain a healthy weight.
• Quit drinking and smoking: Quit smoking and avoid excessive drinking to reduce kidney stress.
• Be cautious with medications: Avoid overtaking painkillers, and make sure to consult your doctor before taking any medication.
• Control blood pressure and blood sugar: Manage your blood pressure and blood sugar by improving your diet, taking medication, and regular monitoring.
