Today, it seems as though everyone is always on the run and with their fast-paced lives, people hardly have time left for their health. Amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday routines, it has become more important than ever to pay attention to one’s health. Lack of sleep, unhealthy eating habits, and sedentary lifestyles have become very common and can lead to a number of health issues in the long run. That is why preventive healthcare has become crucial in these modern times, the most important aspect of which is a routine health check-up which should be done every once in a while, regardless of one’s age or gender. The cost of a general health check-up does not even compare to the peace of mind one can get thanks to the numerous benefits a routine check-up has to offer.

The Importance of a Regular Medical Check-Up

Generally, people visit their primary care physician or doctor for a medical check-up only if there is a significant change in their health or if they notice some symptoms of a medical condition. However, to maintain good health, a regular health check-up is quite important. This will help detect any potential health issue before it becomes a serious problem. A complete medical check-up consists of a number of tests which can not only help in detecting medical issues but can also help identify risk factors of developing a condition even before they become a problem. A general health check-up includes several tests like a lipid profile test, liver function test, kidney function test, complete hemogram test, thyroid profile test, urine culture, blood glucose test, etc.

Benefits of a Routine Check-Up

The major benefits of a regular health check-up include:

  • Reducing the risk of developing serious health conditions, as they can be ruled out at an early stage.
  • Less likeliness of needing emergency care to deal with major health problems.
  • Easier monitoring of existing health issues to limit the risk of complications.
  • Apart from early diagnosis of a health issue, a routine health check-up can help the primary care physician monitor the efficacy of a particular treatment plan for an existing medical condition.
  • Helps ensure better health and increased lifespan.
  • A regular health check-up allows the doctor to deal with a health condition before it becomes serious, leading to fewer expenses on medical treatments.

When Should One Get a Routine Check-Up Performed?

The importance of a regular health checkup cannot be denied, but the question now is – How often should one get them done?

How frequently one should get the routine check-up and the tests included under it will vary depending on several factors, like the age, gender, and current health status of the individual. As a general rule, everyone under the age of 50 should get a regular check-up done once every 3 years if they are in relatively good health. Regular health check-up for senior citizens should be done at least once a year. People with a chronic condition, like diabetes or CKD, or with high-risk factors of developing a medical condition, should consult their doctor for a suitable schedule for the same.

The tests included in routine health check-up will also vary depending on the age and gender of the person. The health check-up for women, men, and seniors should be tailored to suit their requirements. For example, apart from the tests, a general health check-up includes health check-up for women should also include a pap smear, pelvic exam, breast cancer screening, cervical cancer screening, etc. For men, health screening should include abdominal aortic aneurysm screening, prostate exam, etc. Similarly, a health check-up for senior citizens should include screening for bowel cancer, osteoporosis tests, etc.

Preparation

A regular health check-up includes a number of tests, some of which may require an overnight fast before sample collection. It is always a good idea to ask one’s doctor about any health check-up preparation one must do.

Test Reports & Further Steps

Once the report for the check-up has been generated, one should visit their doctor, who will be able to factor in their individual health factors for a proper diagnosis of the overall health. The doctor will also be able to prescribe further testing or course of action, if required.

Undoubtedly, health is the most valuable asset a person has, which makes it crucial for everyone to do everything they can to maintain it. In addition to regular health check-ups, following a nutritious diet, getting enough sleep, and including ample physical activity in the daily routine are also important for a healthy lifestyle.
